The drill, which is an important tool for woodworking, metalworking, construction and DIY projects, is a tool with a rotating drill bit used for drilling holes in various materials. Some specialized drills that are designed differently from the ordinary ones can also be used in medical operations and other applications.
Drills date back as far as the ancient Harappans and Egyptians periods and were known as "bow drill". The more technologically-advanced drills today, including the drill press, are evolved from these bow drills and is believed to be centuries old. Drills are powered by different sources including but not limited to human effort, water wheels and windmills, often with the use of series of belts. But in the late 19th century through the introduction of the electricity and the electric motor, electric tools, which are widely known as powertools, were developed. One of the powertools invented is the power drill. The invention of the first electric drill is credited to Arthur James Arnot and William Blanch Brain in 1889 at Melbourne, Australia. But in 1895, Wilhelm Fein invented the portable electric drill at Stuttgart, Germany.
Just like other tools, there are also many types of drill, each with its own functions and features that can help a craftsman in his line of work. Cordless drill is a type of electric drill which uses rechargeable batteries, but also have similar features to an AC mains-powered drill. Early cordless drills started with 7.2V interchangeable battery packs, but over the years battery voltages increased. Most drill manufacturers use lithium ion batteries which are better than the traditional nickel-cadmium packs, because of longer life, less instances of self-discharging and short circuit due to dendrite growth. Lithium-ion batteries hold charge for significantly longer time as compared to nickel-cadmium batteries.
Voltages of cordless drills means their torque, which is the tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis, fulcrum or pivot. Just as a force is a push or a pull, a torque can be thought of as a twist. The higher voltage of a drill, the higher its torque. That means 24V drills can produce more torque, even as much as AC mains-powered drills. Another benefit of cordless 24V drill is its mobility as oppose to corded drills.
